Grammatical aspect in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English: Insights from experimental studies
This talk addresses important theoretical issues concerning grammatical aspect in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English. Three experimental studies on L1 and L2 processing of grammatical aspect are then presented. L1 processing of grammatical aspect in Bosnian/ Croatian/Serbian was examined in a self-paced reading study and an ERP study, both of which reveal an immediate effect of violations. These findings are discussed in light of general observations about the nature of Slavic aspect and compared with patterns reported for English in the literature. I then present a self-paced reading study combined with a grammaticality judgment task that explored how Bosnian L2 learners process aspectual violations in English. The results suggest that even among advanced learners, L2 processing of English aspectual violations fails short of native-like performance.
